MOB STONES I.W.W. SPEAKERS

New York, June 22.—A mob of over 500 stoned a delegation of I.W.W. men and women tonight when they attempted to speak from the parapet of the aqueduct in Tarrytown. A mounted detachment of fifteen police were rushed to the scene by Supt. Palmer at the demand of Chief of Police William J. Howles, of Tarrytown. His patrolmen found the crowd unmanageable.

The mounted men arrived too late to save the speakers. In the party were Leonard Abbott, Alexander Berkmann, Arthur Caron, Becky Edelson, Mary Yuster, Helen Goldblatt, and George Plunkett, the Cornell graduate.

Undaunted by Shower of Eggs and Stones Anarchists Will Visit Tarrytown.

Conference Will Be Held Today to Decide Upon Date of Next Invasion of Rockefeller’s Town.

UNITED PRESS SPECIAL.
New York, June 23.—“We’re going to speak in Tarrytown, permission or no permission. We’re going to denounce John D. Rockefeller in his own village whether they stone and egg us or not. A conference will be held today to decide when we will speak again.”

This was the declaration here today of Leonard Abbott, president of the free speech league, who will his followers was mobbed last night in the up-river village by residents displeased with attempts to make it a free speech forum.

Show Stains of Eggs.
Abbott, Alexander Berkman, the anarchist, Helen Goldblatt, “Becky” Edelson and about 50 other anarchists and I.W.W.’s bore visible marks today of their attempt to talk freely in Rockefeller’s burg. Several had black eyes, several faces showed cuts from stones and the clothes of others needed cleaning of stains where eggs had splashed. But all were determined to carry on their fight and eager to return again to talk in the village, mob or no mob.

Big Victory Claimed
“It was a big victory” said Abbott today. “In spite of showers of stones and vegetables and eggs, from a huge crowd who gathered to hear or hoot, we kept the free speech flag waving for from an hour to an hour and a half. We said what we had to say. It was pretty hard for the women, several of whom were hurt, but luckily, none of their injuries were serious.

“Tarrytown people, rejoicing in Rockefeller’s $30,000 a month payroll, cannot deprive us of our right of free speech. We are going to talk there. If they don’t want to listen that’s their business. We can’t bring them to our meetings. But there are many people in Tarrytown who do want to hear what we have to say and no one is going to stop us saying it.”

BOUCK WHITE'S FOES SEEK HIS RELEASE

His Counsel Presents Appeal from Directors of Rockefeller Church.

JANE EST AGAIN SENT TO BLACKWELL'S

Fiery I.W.W. Woman Interrupts Meeting of Peace Forum and Tries Short Arm Jab.

Bouck White, who was sentenced to six months in Jail for creating a disturbance in John D. Rockefeller's Calvary Baptist Church, may get his freedom within a day or two. White, who is in the Queens County jail, has served less than a month of his sentence.

The arguments on White's appeal were to have been heard yesterday before Judge Malone in General Sessions. Miss Bertha Rembaugh, counsel for White, changed the programme by producing a letter from the Rev. Cornelius Woelfkin, of Calvary, stating that the church directors believed he had received sufficient punishment. the letter recommended immediate release.

At the suggestion of Judge Malone, Miss Rembaugh agreed to ask Magistrate Campbell, who sentenced White, to advocate clemency. Magistrate Campbell's opinion, the court declared, would carry great weight.

Adjournment was taken to 3 o'clock this afternoon, when former Assistant District Attorney James W. Osborne will apprear for White, if it is necessary to argue the appeal.

Fiery Jane Est, leader, with Frank Tannenbaum of the I.W.W. raid on the Church of St. Alphonsus, the night of March 4, and single handed disruptor of the services in Dr. Parkhurst's church on April 12, yesterday afternoon interrupted Frank Urban of the International Peace Forum, who was conducting a meeting at Madison av. and 24th st., demanding the right to explain to the crowd exactly where Urban was in error. Urban invited Miss Est to "go and get a meeting of her own."

Miss Est responded  with the athletic argument of a short arm jab, which Urban neatly eluded. The Peace Forum man then summoned a policeman and Miss Est was soon arraigned before Lieutenant Powers in the East 22d st. station.

She and the lieutenant staged a small reunion, because it was to the same station that Miss Est was consigned after the Parkhurst uprising, which gave her a thirty-day sentence. Formalities concluded, Miss Est was taken to the Essex Market court, where Magistrate Campbell, who does not pretend to understand philosophy and sociology, gave Miss Est three months on Blackwell's Island. [NOTE: Est had been quoted in another article saying that she was a student of philosophy & sociology.]

Miss Est conducted her own defence. She said that she was thirty-six years of age and had no home.

TROUBLE IS ANTICIPATED AT TARRYTOWN, N.Y.

WHEN "FREE SPEECH" ADVOCATES ARRIVE FROM NEW YORK THIS AFTERNOON

Fire Department Ready to Wet Down the Crowd if Trouble is Started Extra Police on Duty.

(By United Press)

Tarrytown, N.Y., June 2.--Tense with excitement and the fear of serious trouble when expected "free speech" advocates arrive here from New York to continue  wordy warfare against John D. Rockefeller, all Tarrytown today prepared to receive the invaders. Four or five hundred I.W.W. members from New York are expected at any hour to insist on the right of free expression and to force it from the community known as "Rockefeller's town."

The village fears that weapons may be used in the promised invasion and that bloodshed may ensue. The fire department  of the town today had its hose all ready for a quick connection. in addition to this extra men have been sworn in as policemen and arms have been dealt out.

Leonard Abbott, head of the Ferrer School of Socialism in New York, Alexander Berkman, companion of Emma Goldman, the anarchist, and Helen Harris, known from her flaming hair as "Helen of Troy" are expected to be the directing forces of the invasion.

Thirteen I.W.W. prisoners arrested here in Sunday's invasion still are held in jail at White Plains. They will be brought here on Saturday for trial and trouble is surely looked for then. Among the White Plains prisoners is Becky Edelson, successor to "Sweet Marie" Ganz, as woman leader of the free speech hosts. there were reports that the prisoners had started a hunger strike. This was denied by the jail officials.
